Q. I am a pharmacy contractor in Scotland and I have received a prescription for ‘Systane Eye Lid Wipes’, is this allowed?
A. Yes this item is allowed on an NHS prescription under the following conditions:
Systane eye lid wipes are classed as a cosmetic.
In Scotland, Systane wipes are listed in part 7U of the Scottish Tariff. The product is not on the ACBS list, and is treated as a “pay and report”. The pharmacy must provide proof of the invoice price for payment to be made.
There are other lid care wipes available on NHS prescriptions but it is important to note that both Systane and Blephaclean wipes are listed in part 7U of the Scottish Drug Tariff.
In England and Wales any eye lid wipe can be supplied on an NHS prescription provided it is:
- an appliance and listed in the relevant section of the tariff or
- a cosmetic or toiletry and not blacklisted.
Examples that can be supplied include Systane Eye Lid Wipes, Numark Eye Lid Wipes and Lumecare Eye lid wipes.
Blephaclean Eye Lid Wipes are now classed as an appliance and listed in all UK Tariffs.
Please note that eye lid care wipes are not yet recognised as a category for the purposes of reimbursement under tariff rules. Therefore, if the prescription is written as ‘generic eye lid care wipes’ it would NOT be reimbursed.
