FreeStyle Libre 2 Sensors have now entered the Drug Tariff and DND for November 2020.
As you can see from the passage below from the England and Wales Drug Tariff, the Abbott FreeStyle Libre and the FreeStyle Libre 2 sensors are at the same reimbursement price. So what is the difference?
DETECTION SENSOR, INTERSTITIAL FLUID FOR GLUCOSE (taken from November 2020 England & Wales Drug Tariff)
FreeStyle Libre Sensor 1 £35.00 (contains 1 sensor, 1 sensor applicator and 1 wipe)
FreeStyle Libre 2 Sensor 1 £35.00 (contains 1 sensor, 1 sensor applicator and 2 wipes)
The FreeStyle Libre 2 has several improvements over the FreeStyle Libre:
The big difference is the FreeStyle libre 2 has customizable optional alarms that can be set to alert the user for a low reading (between 60-100 mg/dl) and/or a high reading (between 120 and 400mg/dl). These alerts are in the form of an alarm or a vibration, alerting users to scan their FreeStyle Libre 2 sensor so they can obtain their glucose value.
It is approved for adults and children, making this condition a bit easier to manage.
